작품 설명

People Enjoy My Company explores the privatisation of Irish state telecommunications company Telecom Éireann, one of the most controversial episodes in recent Irish history. Prior to the company’s flotation on the stock market in 1999, the Irish public were promised a new form of ownership and more than half a million people (20 percent of the population) purchased shares based on the principle of it becoming a share-owning democracy. The film represents the perspectives and experiences of these soon-to-be-disappointed shareholders – after mismanagement and buyouts caused high losses and poor infrastructural investment – as shared in early online forums, chat rooms, and on social media. The artist’s extensive research sets the event against a pre-millennium backdrop of Y2K, the Celtic Tiger economic boom and emerging ideologies of technological emancipation. Funded by The Arts Council of Ireland with exhibition funding from Brightening Air. The development was funded by a Rapid Residency Award from Science Gallery Dublin.
